Beta Tau History

A brief History of the Beta Tau Chapter of Kappa Sigma

1894 - Ten O'clock Club - Skull and Bones founded. 

1903 - Ten O'clock Club - Skull and Bones installed as Beta Tau Chapter of Kappa Sigma.  Chapter resides in the Denning house at the corner of 9th and Freemont.   

1904 -  Purchase new chapter house at 8th and Dearborn.

1910 - Chapter house lost to fire.  Chapter purchases G.A. Nicholson House on South 8th Street.  During this time the chapter gains the nicknames "country club" and "beans".   

1915 - G.A. Nicholson House destroyed in fire. 

1917 - New chapter house complete on the property where the Nicholson House was located.  The new chapter house is the first house built in Baldwin City with the specific purpose of being a fraternity house. 

1938 - Mortgage on chapter house paid off. 

1955 - Mother's club begins meeting.  In the early 1990's becomes the Beta Tau Parents Club.

1967 - Chapter House addition completed, eight new rooms, sleeping porch and library added.  House can now house up to 50 members.

1976 - Beta Tau experiences third chapter house fire.  Brothers Stephen Hoge, Ted Bailey, Mark Morris, David Sloop, and Stuart McCoay die in the fire.  These brothers are collectively known as the "Five Friends and Brothers of Beta Tau".

1977 - "Run for Brotherhood" fundraiser raises $10,000.00.

1978 - New Chapter House dedicated.  Front entry, dinning area, kitchen, library and house parents quarters complete.

1980 - First wing of Chapter House completed, 8 rooms, house has living quarters for 16 men.  

1983 - Second wing of Chapter House completed, 8 additional rooms, house now has living quarters for 32 men.  

1985 - Named "Top Ten" chapter by Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

1986 - Addition of four rooms added to north wing, house now has living quarters for 40 men.

1988 - Awarded "Founders Award of Chapter Excellence" by Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

1989 - Awarded "Founders Award of Chapter Excellence" by Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

1990 - Addition of four rooms added to south wing, house now has living quarters for 48 men.

1996 - Chapter House named after George Maxwell.

1997 - Awarded "Founders Award of Chapter Excellence" by Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

2003 - Chapter celebrates Centennial at annual Stag dinner.
